An Impossible Discovery
I tried to stay calm.
"That's a beautiful necklace," I said.
Claire smiled.
"Thank you. My father gave it to me when I was little."
I nearly dropped my fork.
Her father had given it to her?
That made no sense.
There had never been another necklace.
My mother's locket was unique.
At least, that was what I had always believed.
For the rest of dinner, I barely heard the conversation.
My mind kept returning to the pendant around Claire's neck.
The Old Photo Albums
After they left, I climbed into the attic and pulled down several old photo albums.
For hours, I flipped through page after page.
My mother wore the necklace in nearly every photograph.
There was no doubt.
Every detail matched perfectly.
The green stone.
The engraved leaves.
The hidden hinge.
The same necklace.
The one I had buried with her.
Or so I thought.
