4/12 A simple idea
For the moment, nothing is official. We have been talking about this measure for several years, but nothing has yet been implemented. It is currently being discussed since the debate is coming back to the forefront.

When Road Safety communicated on this subject, it was emphasized that "people who consider it useful to display such a badge on their vehicle are completely free to do so". Therefore, if you had a loved one who would need it given their vulnerable physical and cognitive abilities, do not hesitate to suggest it.

"Older people have fewer accidents than other age groups, but these accidents are more serious (...) a younger person survives, an older person dies", according to Road Safety which reports 25% of people killed in a road accident even though they constitute 19% of the population.

7/12 For their own safety
It's not about pointing the finger at older people, but about really looking at the safest possibilities for them. This is why certain measures that have been suggested take into account the reduction of certain physical and cognitive abilities, like SLRs, which are essential while driving.

Everyone is taking part in this debate since it concerns the security of every citizen, however, a great divergence is noted. Between those who believe that this violates the dignity of seniors and others who think that a lifetime license without any additional measures is a bad idea. Nothing is concrete.

To preserve road safety without targeting a particular category of society, the solutions to be put in place should reconcile the safety of elderly people and their autonomy.

Among the solutions to be applied are awareness campaigns for various civil society actors, but also competent authorities. These campaigns will aim to disseminate good driving behavior and initiatives related to road safety, including for seniors.

This question is, once again, at the center of concerns and debates, in particular with the bill submitted at the end of July 2023 to the National Assembly, aimed at setting up medical examinations for drivers over 75 years old.
